About feeds

Thursday, October 5, 2006

Are you familiar with the way that newspapers and magazines can be delivered to your door rather than you having to go and collect them? News feeds work in a similar way, delivering content to you using the internet. Choose what you want to subscribe to and new items are sent to you automatically. N.B. 'subscribe' just means 'join' - this is free, there are no charges involved for our feeds.

We offer two kinds of feeds: news and podcast (What is a podcast?). Details of all feeds available for subscription can be found in our News feeds and podcast directory. If you would prefer to receive e-mail announcements instead then please join our mailing list.

How do I get started using news feeds?

You will need a news reader or aggregator. This can either be software that is installed on your machine or you can use web-based feed reader services. You can subscribe to our RSS (Really Simple Syndication) web syndication feeds represented by RSS links on this site. Copy and paste these URLs into your news reader. What is a podcast?

A podcast feed is similar to a news feed in that you subscribe but instead of just text or images podcasts are usually audio or video files. As these files can be quite large we'd recommend that you use a broadband internet connection for downloading podcasts.

N.B. You do not require an iPod to listen to audio podcasts. You can listen using a computer or the files can be transferred to any portable media device or MP3 player. About podcasts (Wikipedia)
